This artwork features Catalina, an indigenous Colombian woman who played a vital role as a translator between the Spanish colonizers and the native tribes during the 16th century. Considered by some as a pacifist and by others as a traitor, she remains the only indigenous woman revered in Colombian culture today.
Through my art, I aim to highlight the often-overlooked presence of indigenous women in history. The piece incorporates the yellow, blue, and red hues of the Colombian flag and merges indigenous elements with Art Nouveau influences to represent the complexity of Catalina’s identity as someone caught between two cultures.
